Gingerbreed Spaceship

I made this ship for the film Gingerbreed back in 2007. The production is still on going and recently I got to view the trailer which has been put together to help secure funding to finish this Sc-fi comedy.
I've been given permission to finally show what the whole spaceship looks like. This Russian spaceship is based on the 'Hammer and Sickle' soviet symbol.

The sickle section rotates around the hammer

The clamps detach so the main ship can land on planets, it has landing thrusters which deploy from the front and back of the ship, see below.

Gingerbreed Spaceship

I started building this spaceship back in 2007 for Jonathan Dorfman and Szymon Weglarski's SF comedy Gingerbreed, a new showreel on their FX Company's site shows a number of clips from the movie and some brief shots of the finished ship (see above) I've not had word off the guys at HiFi 3D in some time so I don't know what the status is of the final film.

Gingerbreed

Gingerbreed is an independent SF Comedy feature directed by Jonathan Dorfman and Szymon Weglarski, with live action filmed in New York in 2006. This low budget film is relying heavily on the use of virtual sets to boost it's look, hence the film being shot against green screen, with production of the large amount of Visual FX shots has been progressing steadily over the last few years. I was contacted to build the main Russian ship for this film a while back, and I
documented the making of part of the ship here on my art blog. The whole ship design will be unveiled closer to the films release, as Jonathan and Szymon want to keep the full design of the craft under wraps. I'm really looking forward to seeing the final film and what the ship looks like rendered.

Gingerbreed - Spaceship - Work in Progress Pt 9

It's hard to show this landing leg out of context with the ship, but I'm not allowed to show the rest of the ship yet. Anyway been working on the main landing legs which means the ship does land in the movie. Some work modeling wise to do on the legs yet but this was just a quick test, the very top part of the leg won't be seen, that sits inside the ship where the landing legs retracts from. The legs will have a bit of give when the ship lands and then as the legs raise the ship back up a clamp will lock the gear in place, I'm still working on that mechanism now.
The guys at Gingerbreed have a version of the Spaceship model that they're using to block out shots with at the moment.

Gingerbreed - Spaceship - Work in Progress Pt 8

Here's some work on the area at the back of the ship that has been left empty for a while, it now has the retractable access tube and launch arm for the ships escape vehicle. The arm swings to the side of the ship to launch, when you get to see the whole ship this will become clear why.

Gingerbreed - Spaceship - Work in Progress Pt 7

Here's a small update showing some of the texture work around a section of the main spine of the ship.

Gingerbreed - Spaceship - Work in Progress Pt 6

Here are some renders I did in Vue of the finished landing Thrusters, the ship has four of these, 2 up front and 2 at the back. No shaders applied to these meshes, just the basic textures so far.

Gingerbreed - Spaceship - Work in Progress Pt 5

Here are some updates of the texturing of the side thrusters at the rear of the ship and the general engine area. These thrusters retract in to the main hull of the ship when it's in flight, and only come out for landing.

I've also detailed and textures the are at the top of the ship where the mechanism will go that the escape vessel attaches to, and you people thought that was a swimming pool.

These two pics at the bottom are a bit more updated than those of the thrusters.

Gingerbreed - Spaceship - Work in Progress Pt 4

UPDATED

Here's an update on the ship, or at least the parts of the ship I can show you all. Been texturing the engines and side thrusters and picking out panel details etc...
I've added an updated pic, I've done some external texture work around and on the engines and started picking out parts using a sandier coloured material.

Gingerbreed - Spaceship - Work in Progress Pt 3

With the majority of modelling work on the main ship finished now I've started texturing the ship with this first pass, markings and other details will be added once all of the ship is mapped. The guys in the US will handle final shaders for the materials etc... as they'll be doing there work in Maya and I'm working in Max.
Szymon tells me they're in the process of signing someone to score Gingerbreed.

Gingerbreed - Spaceship - Clamp Arm WIP

This is a section of the main ship that I'm building for Gingerbreed sadly I can't show you the whole ship or what this connects to yet. The animation linked here is purely to show the working of the mechanism, the speed of the Clamp Arm etc... will be sorted by the Gingerbreed guys.

Gingerbreed - Spaceship - Work in Progress Pt 2

Here are a few update pics of the ship I'm making for the SF Comedy Gingerbreed I still can't show all the ship and its components until Jon and Szymon give the go ahead. And no that area on the top near the engines isn't a swimming pool ! :)

Gingerbreed - Spaceship - Work in Progress

IMAGE UPDATE
A bit of an update to show some of the new detail that I've added to this section.

I mentioned earlier in the week that I'd post some stills of the film project I'm working on for the guys in New York.
This is the main engine section of the starring spaceship for the SF Comedy film Gingerbreed currently being made by Jonathan Dorfman and Szymon Weglarski.

Plot summary:
In this action-packed throwback to the Cold War era, a team of astronauts and cosmonauts join forces to investigate a loss in communications from a colony on Jupiter's moon Europa. With traitors in their midst and their numbers dwindling, the crew must discover what killed the colonists before they are next.

There's still a lot more work to do on this ship, and although I won't be able to post any renders of the whole ship yet, Jon has said I can post sections and detail. Having built the 'HMS Camden Lock' for UK's SF Comedy show Hyperdrive it's weird building another main ship for another SF Comedy project, for Hyperdrive I built a British ship, for this project I'm building a Russian Ship. I can't reveal the name of this craft yet though.
